According to Consumer research group NPD, most people who rent DVDs or Blu-ray discs now get them from Redbox kiosks. It noted, however, that one of the reasons is that Redbox's principal competitor, Netflix, is focusing its attention on its streaming service rather than its DVD-by-mail service. According to NPD's latest study, consumer rentals of the physical discs fell by 11 percent in 2011 versus 2010. "The movie-rental market is clearly undergoing a sea change, as consumers become better equipped to access on-demand and streamed movies and are more comfortable with available delivery options," NPD analyst Russ Crupnick said in a statement. "Even so renting physical discs from now-ubiquitous kiosks in grocery stores and other venues has taken the lead as the most popular movie-rental method in the U.S." Redbox accounted for 37 percent of total rentals in 2011, up from 25 percent in 2010. Netflix was No. 2 with 25 percent, while Blockbuster's share of the DVD/Blu-ray rental market fell to 17 percent.
