The trailer for the movie adaption of classic video game Ratchet and Clank has been put online, but will it convert to the screen?
Ratchet and Clank was one of the defining games of the golden generation of Playstation 2 games and after numerous sequels and spin-offs the popular video game franchise is at last being brought to the big screen. The question that remains though is will the movie actually be any good?
Looking at the trailer, the immediate signs are quite promising given the animators have stuck to the style used in the game, but is this actually a good thing? Remember Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within? No us neither. But considering how bad each of the live action video game adaptations since then have been then maybe this sticking to tradition approach will work significantly in it's favour. Of course, Ratchet and Clank never took itself quite as seriously as any recent adaptions (Prince of Persia, Max Payne, DOOM) did, so maybe this will only spell good things.
History dictates that the film will be a flop, but we could be approaching a renaissance for movie adaptions especially given the massive commercial and critical success that recent comic book adaptions, a genre considered dead before the Dark Knight trilogy, have been. With Assassin's Creed and Metal Gear Solid films said to be in the pipeline then is it maybe time for video game adaptions to become the next big box office success.
We can be forgiven for jumping to conclusions here, but maybe the trailer for the new Ratchet and Crank movie could spell the future of box office hits to come. The idea of a Crash Bandicoot or Rayman movie may seem like a cringe-worthy idea right now, but if it proves to be a success then who knows what gaming titles will be taken up by movie execs.
