The 44 year old cut short her trip and checked into Bronovo Hospital in The Hague on Wednesday morning (28Oct15).

She is being treated for a kidney infection and back pain.

"I've talked to her and she's doing well," her husband, King Willem-Alexander, told reporters accompanying the royal party in Shanghai.

He has since told the Telegraaf, "I am proud of her, she really tried. We thought it was the flu. But it turned out to be a kidney infection. We're waiting for more test results from the hospital. I hope she's back home soon."

Maxima and Willem-Alexander ascended to the Dutch throne in 2013.
