'Friday the 13th: The Game' has been announced on Kickstarter and the multi-player survival horror title will let players take control of murderous psychopath Jason Vorhees - one of the most iconic big screen killers of all time.
Players will be able to play as Jason Vorhees in 'Friday the 13th: The Game'.
The horror title's Kickstarter page has been launched and reveals that it will be a third-person, asymmetrical multi-player survival horror with one player controlling the hockey mask-wearing psychopath and seven others taking charge of camp counsellors trying to escape from Camp Crystal Lake and avoid being murdered.
Developers Gun Media obtained the license to the 'Friday the 13th' movie franchise from director Sean S. Cunningham - who helmed the first instalment and owns the license - and have promised gamers the chance to ''brutally kill camp counsellors in new and inventive ways as well as some that will seem all too familiar''.
Gun Media's Ronnie Hobbs - who originally began work on a game called 'Summer Camp' with Wes Keltner which was inspired by the 'Friday the 13th' movies before getting the OK to pixelate Jason - says the slasher genre-inspired kills and ''killer versus victim'' gameplay will be unique and will keep gamers coming back to the title.
He said: ''Going too over-the-top in the gore department isn't really a concern to us right now. In fact, the slasher genre is more about creative kills and practical effects than all-out gore ... Expect to us to be very faithful to the slasher genre ... Actually what intrigues me is the 'killer versus victim' dynamic. This is a staple of slasher films and something we've yet to see fully realised in the video game industry.''
Hobbs and Keltner have hired horror special effects legend Tom Savini - who worked on the original 1980 'Friday the 13th' film and 1984's 'Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter' - to bring Jason to life and come up with imaginative ways to kill the counsellors.
Savini said: ''My input is to creatively kill people; creatively kill teenagers with household implements. It's a living but somebody has to do it! I've also got to come up with a new look for Jason. That's exciting because I haven't had to think about that for 35 years.''
'Friday the 13th: The Game' is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC and Gun Media is seeking $700,000 on Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/613356213/friday-the-13th-the-game/description) to complete it.
So far $250,788 has been pledged and there are numerous different rewards on offer for backers depending on how much they donate.
For $10,000 (£6,514) you get to be one of the selectable camp counsellors in the game.
