2011 saw the triumphant return of classic animated heavyweights on the big screen. The Smurfs Movie and TinTin were released to mixed reviews but universally financially successful, both bagging hundreds of millions at the box office. Following the successes of these films, Iconix have announced today that a 'Peanuts' film is set for production.
Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the gang, created by Charles Schulz, will be making their way to the big screen on November 25th, 2015. The film is set to be produced by 20th Century Fox and their CGI animation studio, responsible for 'Ice Age', 'Robots' and 'Rio', Blue Sky Studios. Steve Martino will direct. Although it is now the project of one of the biggest production companies in the world, 'Peanuts' is remaining in the family, and Schulz's son and grandson have written the script, alongside Cornelius Uliano. The trio will also be producing the film.
The film is, as yet, untitled, but its release will mark the 65th year of 'Peanuts', and 50 years of 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' which was the first Peanuts TV special. The Peanuts comic strip has become the most read and most influential animation, which was read by 355 million people all over the world, according to ComingSoon.net. CEO of Iconix, Neil Cole said "This film will give us a new medium in which to engage consumers globally and showcase the power of the Peanuts brand".
Charles Schulz's son, Craig, said "We have been working on this project for years. We finally felt the time was right... to create this film. I am thrilled we will be partnering with Blue Sky/Fox to create a Peanuts movie that is true to the strip and will continue the legacy in honor of my father." No doubt it will be a stunning tribute to the vastly influential animator, who died in 2000.
