The elder brother of Oscar Pistorius, Carl Pistorius, has been seriously injured in a car accident in South Africa. He was involved in a head-on collision on a motorway near to Pretoria, the country's capital, whilst returning from a business trip. The incident was witnessed by a colleague of his who was travelling seperately behind Pistorius, who was able to explain to the family what happened. According to reports he has undergone successful surgery, but his condition is still critical.

"Carl's vehicle was hit head-on by another car that had swerved from the opposite side of the highway into the oncoming traffic," said father Arnold Pistorius in a statement released after the accident.

Last year Carl Pistorius went to trial and was acquitted of the negligent killing of a female biker in 2008 after the woman collided with the back of his SUV and died days later in hospital. Carl was acquitted of all charges, but his case hit the headlines as it came just weeks after his younger brother was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, South African supermodel Reeva Steencamp. Later this week lawyers will present their closing arguments in the trial which has sent shockwaves through the sporting world. If found guilty of murder, Pistorius could face between twenty five years and life imprisonment.
