Kyle Bennett, the first member of the American Olympic team for BMXing, which debuted as a sport in the 2008 Olympics, in Beijing, has died in a car crash in Conroe, Texas, just north of State Capital, Houston.

Bennett was reportedly driving at a high speed when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle, a 20086 Toyota pick-up truck. The Daily Mail reports that “His vehicle flipped and rolled through a ditch and crashed into the wrought-iron gate of a private residence.” Officials arrived quickly and did all they could to help a man that had represented their country, but upon cutting him out of the vehicle, he was pronounced dead at the scene. According to Yahoo he wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

Bennett had been riding professionally since graduating high school, having qualified for his first national championship at just nine years old. Steve Johnson, CEO of USA Cycling released a statement in response to this sad news. He said “All of us at USA Cycling were deeply saddened to learn this morning of the tragic and untimely loss of Kyle Bennett, [he] was a pioneer in Olympic BMX and an inspiration to those of us that knew him.
