Often on these news pages of ours, Contact will bring tales of art selling in its tens of thousands and even millions. Interesting news though it may well be, it doesn't really instil the everyday art lover that they're ever likely to own work by one of their favourite artists. However, according to The Independent, the Frieze Art Fair in London is set to feature a new initiative selling pieces by respected names for much more affordable prices.
Allied Editions has been jointly set up by the Camden Arts Centre, Chisenhale Gallery, the Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Serpentine Gallery, Studio Voltaire and the Whitechapel Gallery. It reports that between tomorrow and Thursday and on Sunday (October 11-14, 2012) it will be selling works from contemporary artists including former YBA Gillian Wearing and Turner prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller as well as one of the founding fathers of conceptual art, Mel Bochner. You won't be paying through the nose for their work though, as prices will range as little as £25 for a poster, up to £9,600 for a hand-sculpted porcelain, with many prices settling around the £1500 mark.
With other offshoot markets around the Frieze too, art collectors can be comfortably satiated for their needs without breaking the bank, and may get first time collectors their first foot hold in the art value appreciation game.
