Neutral Milk Hotel have announced their long-awaited come-back.
Alt-indie heroes Neutral Milk Hotel are set to perform together for the first time in five years later this year, with the band posting the dates to a five-stop mini-tour on their website earlier today. The website also teased that 'there's more to come' so hold tight because the band might very well be coming to a venue near you.
The list of shows begins in the band's hometown of Athens, Georgia, where they will play two gigs on October 22 and 23. The group will then head to North Carolina before heading to Taiwan for the Hostess Club Festival at the end of October. The group will then head over to Tokyo in December for the Japanese leg of the Hostess CLub Festival. The group wont be on their own during their time touring American, as Elf Power (at Athens), Half Japanese (at Athens 2nd show) and Daniel Johnston (North Carolina) will be opening for the group.
The band last performed together in October 1998, coming together through the efforts of front-man Jeff Mangum in the early 90's. The group only recorded two albums together, their second effort In the Aeroplane Over the Sea has regularly been praised by music critics as a indie-masterpiece since it was released in 1998. The band went on hiatus shortly after touring the album and remained relatively inactive until the beginning of this decade when Mangum began perform live again in 2010. Mangum has performed on the festival circuit and occasionally on his own a few times since, but until now they have not performed in public together since '98. Did someone say new material?
