Jay Leno, whose Tonight show has managed to remain in first place during the late-night period despite lead-in shows in primetime that are the lowest-rated of any major network, has been chastised by NBC Entertainment chief Robert Greenblatt for joking about the network's standing, the New York Times reported on Saturday. According to the Times report, which cited three executives close to the situation, Greenblatt took offense to a segment of Leno's Feb. 28 monologue in which he referred to the fact that Spanish-language Univision draws bigger ratings among some age groups than NBC. It's so bad, The Biggest Loser isn't just a TV show anymore; it's our new motto, he quipped, then, apparently on a roll, added, It's so bad, NBC called Manti Te'o and asked him to bring in some imaginary viewers. The monologue, said the Times, touched off a series of emails between Greenblatt and Leno, with Leno maintaining that late-night stars have traditionally poked fun at their masters.
