Time was when it cost $4,000 or more to process a film print and ship it to a theater. With the arrival of digital projectors showing digital prints, that cost has been whittled down to a few hundred dollars. And now that cost is going to be further reduced by satellite distribution to theaters. Digital Cinema Distribution Coalition (DCDC) a group of theater chains, including AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, and Universal and Warner Bros. studios has signed a deal with five major studios, Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal and Lionsgate, to deliver all their movies via satellite by the end of the year, possibly beginning this summer.
