Katsuma, Poppet and the rest of the gang are in a race against time to collect the ransom for an accident and extremely rare Moshling egg, which has been stolen by the villainous Dr Strangeglove.

In case you have absolutely no idea what we're talking about: Moshi Monsters is a hugely successful website aimed at children aged 6-14. It has 80 million registered users in 150 territories worldwide. Essentially, users choose from one of six virtual per monsters that they most create, name and nurture for. It's like a cross between Tamagotchi and Pokemon.

With such a sizeable following, it's no surprise that the team behind Moshi Monsters is trying a movie version. In 1998, the Pokemon film topped box office charts in its opening weekend and eventually grossed $163 million worldwide. To date, it's the second highest grossing TV adaptation movie, behind The Simpsons Movie.

"We're excited to launch the first ever Moshi Monsters movie," said Mind Candy CEO Michael Acton Smith, "This is our first foray into movies and Universal brings the expertise needed to ensure the best possible success. We can't wait for Moshi to hit the big screen."

Much like the Pokemon craze, Moshi Monsters has branched out to music, trading cards, video games and figurines. Last Christmas, toys were given away in McDonald's Happy Meals in the United States and Canada.

Moshi Monsters The Movie will be in cinemas December 20, 2013.
