On Sunday night, Miss Colombia, Paulina Vega, triumphed in the 63rd edition of the Miss Universe held at Florida International University in Miami. Miss Vega, a business students living in Bogota, won over Miss USA, Nia Sanchez, who took second place in the prestigious pageant.

Contestants from the Netherlands, Jamaica and Ukraine rounded out the five finalists at the 63rd annual pageant, which was broadcast on NBC from Florida International University in Miami. The pageant included an evening gown portion, a swimsuit round and an interview round.

Vega, a 22-year-old student of business administration from Barranquilla, Colombia, said she would wear the crown with "pride and excitement" as she heard the news that fans in Colombia had taken to the streets to celebrate, according to Yahoo! News.

"It felt like home. I felt like I was in Colombia with my people. I felt that support in every moment of the pageant," she said, wearing a sparkling silver gown with vertical stripes at a press conference after the competition.

Vega’s win continues a trend of South American contestants dominating Miss USA, with contestants from Venezuela taking the title last year as well as in 2007 and 2008. According to the pageant’s website, Miss Vega studies business administration at the Universidad Javeriana in Bogota and has been modelling since she was 8 years old. Miss Vega is one of seven children. She graduated from a German school in Colombia, and speaks English and a bit of French.
