A Kansas man who donated sperm so that a lesbian couple could have a child now finds himself on the receiving end of an order from the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) to pay child support, now that the couple have split and have filed for state assistance. Rather than pay the assistance, the state department demanded that Angela Bauer and Jennifer Schreiner reveal the identity of the sperm donor, William Marotta so that they could trace him and demand child support payments for the child, for whom he has relinquished all parenting rights.
The 46 year old machinist received notice of the demands back in late October, according to Fox News and said that he feels the issue is as a political one and a result of the state’s feelings towards same-sex couples. “I can’t help but feel this is somewhat of a political issue,” he told Fox. “As the legal bills mount, I’m sure it’s going to leave more of a distaste,” he added. “In the long run, I think this will be a good thing, but I’m the one getting squashed. I can’t even believe it’s gone this far at this point and there’s not a damn thing I can do about it.”
Bauer and Schreiner, who were together for eight years and had previously adopted other children, have said that they will support Marotta in his court battle against the state department.
