Three years after the author's death, information about previously unreleased work might have come to light.
In what could turn out to be the biggest news for fans of J.D. Salinger, announced in the past decade, the publishers of an upcoming biography of the Catcher in the Rye author claim they have found out what he was working on in the last decades of his life. David Shields and Shane Salerno are the authors of “Salinger” due to hit bookstores and online platforms on September 3. Just three days later, on September 6, Salerno’s documentary on the author will be released.
According to the Associated Press, Salerno and Shields offer an extensive collection of previously unpublished work by Salinger, including new stories about Franny and Zooey from the author’s collection of stories about the Glass Family. According to the biography, the posthumous releases are planned for sometime between 2015 and 2020. The biography provides an extensive and detailed catalogue of the previously unseen works, citing “two independent and separate sources” who Shields and Salerno say have “documented and verified” the information.
The release which might draw the most attention is a story, which revisits Catcher in the Rye protagonist Holden Caulfield. The material reportedly draws on Salinger’s own World War II experiences, as well as his experimentation with Eastern religion. A publisher is yet to be announced, with Little, Brown and Company, the publisher of Salinger’s four original books, having refused to comment.
