The Iraqi government has suspended the license of Al Jazeera, the Arab satellite news network and other local TV channels that it claims have incited violence by devoting coverage to recent Sunni protests. The Communication and Media Commission (CMC) particularly singled out Al Jazeera's coverage of weekend coverage of a crackdown by government security forces on a Sunni Muslim protest in Hawija on Tuesday that left dozens dead and wounded. The stations were also reporting that Sunni preachers are calling for jihad against the government, charging that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite, is collaborating with Iran against Sunnis. The CMC accused the channels of broadcasting reports that encourage criminal acts of revenge and said that they lean towards misleading and exaggeration more than towards objectivity.
