The Internet is increasingly the place to post photos of receipts with a humorous, offensive, or heart warming story behind them. There is, in fact, an entire website dedicated to 'funny receipts' called FunnyReceipts.com. However, for one woman who posted a photo of a bill from a customer in a chain of Applebees she worked in, the outcome wasn't so funny as she lost her job.
Chelsea Welch posted the photo of a receipt from Pastor Alois Bell, which read "I give God 10%. Why do you get 18%?" and crossed out the tip. Obviously, this is an offensive way to treat anyone in a customer service role. As Welch tells the Consumerist: "I originally posted the note as a lighthearted joke. I thought the note was insulting, but it was also comical. I posted it to Reddit because I thought other users would find it entertaining." And they did, the note went viral. And Alois Bell found out and wasn't best pleased.
"My heart is really broken," Bell said. "I've brought embarrassment to my church and ministry." Speaking to the Smoking Gun she claimed that she had in fact left a tip of $6 in cash as well. However, Welch has no clue who got that money, but doesn't think that's the point anyway. "[Y]ou can't really argue with what's plainly written, and what was written was insulting."
"[B]ecause this person got embarrassed that their selfishness was made public, Applebee's has made it clear that they would rather lose a dedicated employee than lose an angry customer," Welch said. "That's a policy I can't understand."
