The Great British Bake Off came to a climax on Tuesday evening (October 17, 2012) with a shock result that saw law student John Whaites, 23, snatch the title away from favourite James Morton.
Morton - the son of Scottish broadcaster, writer and musician Tom Morton - seemingly had the prize wrapped up a couple of weeks back, though faltered at the final hurdle. The 21-year-old Glasgow University medical student won the final's opening technical challenge with a set of solid, if unremarkable fondant fancies, though his puff pastry pithivier and show-stopper failed to make the grade. For the latter challenge, James somewhat bizarrely attempted to make five cakes in just two hours (despite the criteria only requesting one), though none of them ended up behind any good. In fact, James practically fainted when host Paul Hollywood told him his sponge was dry. After the show, he tweeted, "Dear everyone, I am so, so sorry for letting you down. Thank you for the support. Sincerely, James," before graciously adding, "Well done John!!! Best on the day."
Nevertheless, James is perhaps the most likely of the contestants to do more television work, given his experimental approach to baking, not to mention the garish jumpers that he proudly donned each week.
