Thunderbirds creator Gerry Anderson was laid to rest today, with hundreds of well-wishers attending to his final farewell in Reading.
Anderson, who also helmed such popular shows as Captain Scarlet, Stingray and Joe 90, died last month, aged 83, and will forever be remembered as a pioneer in television for his visionary stance towards his creations. The day's service was held at Reading Crematorium, followed shortly after by a reception in Henley-on-Thames, the town where Anderson was from.
The inside of the crematorium was made into a standing room only, with speakers delivering the service set-up outside the chapel for the 100+ people waiting outside the venue. People from across the globe came to pay homage to the late, great man as he was laid to rest, show that his was a legacy that stretched much further than most. The ceremony was also, as you may expect, littered with Thunderbirds memorabilia - including a floral Thunderbird 2 atop his coffin and a full-size replica of FAB1 - the pink Rolls Royce which chauffeured Lady Penelope around - also on show outside the venue.
Mr Anderson was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2010, with his condition worsening at an unprecedented speed in the months before his death. He was a strong advocate of Alzheimer's charities upon his diagnosis and fronted many fund-raisers in benefit of the disease. His son, Jamie Anderson, read a eulogy during the service commending his father's work, saying: "I have never been more proud of my father than the day he faced up to his battle with Alzheimer's. He battled it head-on and came out very publicly speaking about how it had affected his life."
