Olivia Culpo, a 23-year-old sophomore at Boston University, was the one to take the crown (well, the biggest one anyway) at the Miss Universe pageant on Friday.

Culpo is the first American lady to claim the title in 15 years, which is odd, considering the pageant is owned by none other than the all-American rich guy, Donald Trump. But this isn’t the only thing that’s special about the winner, for you see, Culpo is (gasp) a brunette! Some are taking the winner’s less traditional appearance as a sign that the Miss Universe pageant is moving in a more tolerant, progressive direction, but is that really the case?

Despite the fact that Olivia isn’t your typical Grace Kelly look-alike, she is still a young, thin, white, American woman. There is nothing wrong with any of these characteristics of course, but it also seems that claiming her win was “progressive” because of her dark hair and Italian heritage, is a bit too much. And sure, eight of the last twelve Miss Universe winners have had dark hair, but does that really signify any meaningful change in the pageant’s overall attitude? Maybe the judges simply prefer brunettes. Nevertheless, we here at Contact Music would like to congratulate Miss Culpo on her success and wish her all the best in the future.
