Intrepid Metropolis reporter Clark Kent quits his job at The Daily Planet in a forthcoming issue of Superman. The crime fighting hero's alter-ego has been with the newspaper since DC Comics debuted the character in 1940, though he's finally handed in his notice, according to USA Today.

In the new issue - available in stores and online on Wednesday (October 24, 2012) - Kent's strong feelings for Lois Lane and his squabbles with Daily Planet editor Perry White lead him to quit in front of the whole staff. Before he leaves, Clark gives a speech about how the true sense of journalism has given way to entertainment. Writer Scott Lobdell explained, "This is really what happens when a 27-year-old guy is behind a desk and he has to take instruction from a larger conglomerate with concerns that aren't really his own. Superman is arguably the most powerful person on the planet, but how long can he sit at his desk with someone breathing down his neck and treating him like the least important person in the world?" After Kent's big speech, entertainment reporter Cat Grant also quits the Planet, though Lobdell hints that she'll be bringing "a whole other set of skills" to their next venture.

2013 promises to be a big year for Superman, with a new comic book from Scott Snyder and Jim Lee on the way, as well as Zack Snyder's Man of Steel movie.
