D.J. Caruso is hoping 3-D films will not be around forever because he is ''not particularly a huge fan'' of the technique.
Director D.J. Caruso hopes 3-D movies are a "passing gimmick".
The 'I Am Number Four' filmmaker is not a fan of the technology unless it helps advance a story, and hopes it will "just go away", despite knowing that might not be best for his career.
He told BANG Showbiz: "I love 'Avatar' and I love what's happening when people shoot a movie that is supposed to be 3-D and intended to be 3-D but I'm not particularly a huge fan of 3-D. I personally hope it's sort of this passing gimmick.
"Personally, I mean it's probably not the right thing to say - because it's not the best thing for my career - but I just want it to go away. I really want it to go away."
The 46 year old prefers the "old fashioned" way his new movie 'I Am Number Four' - starring Alex Pettyfer and Dianna Agron - can be seen on IMAX screens, and believes people should stay away from 3-D unless they can master it.
He said: "I think there are so many things now that are being converted and it becomes a spectacle. I'm proud that this movie is an IMAX movie, IMAX is the old fashioned kind of big way. I feel like until people really learn how to craft a proper movie, obviously 'Avatar' did that, but I think the rest of us, I just don't think it is right."
