Birmingham is famous (ahem) for having more miles of canal than Venice itself. It seems it had a few metres too many for one startled Capital FM newsreader, Laura Safe, when she took an unexpected plunge into one of Birmingham's canals, while she was texting her boyfriend.

Speaking to the Mail she recalled the incident: "I thought ice on the canal was pavement because it looked dark in the corner of my eye," she  said. "I heard a man called out "stop" to me and I looked up at him, but it was too late by that point. I tried to get my balance and ended up slipping into the canal. But not before I'd saved my handbag and mobile phone."

After the event she tweeted:

Despite warnings from a man passing her by, Lucy ignored it all. Though she's safe by name and perhaps not by nature, she sure is lucky, as 34 year old Neil Edginton, a businessman who was passing by, saw what happened and ran to her aid. "This man came running up Baywatch-style, grabbed my hand and pulled me up. He was a hero and saved my life," Lucy said.
