Nickelodeon had cancelled the long-running teen drama last week after broadcasting it for 14 years, but the streaming giant will revive it with a new cast next year.
Cheer up, ‘Degrassi’ fans, your favourite show is not gone forever! Less than a week after Nickelodeon announced they’d be pulling the plug on the long-running teen drama, Netflix has stepped in to say that they’ll be reviving the show with a “next class” of students in 2016.
NickTeen has been a home to ‘Degrassi’ for fourteen seasons since it began in 2001, but the Nickelodeon network broke the news on June 4th that it would be cancelling the Canadian teen drama after its new series finishes at the end of July.

However, the streaming service Netflix announced via its official Twitter feed on Tuesday (June 9th) would be launching ‘Degrassi: The Next Class’ next year. The show will be back with a brand new cast, effectively a new generation of students and era for the show, which has existed on TV in one form or another since 1979.

In a statement to Variety, Netflix’s vice president of global content Erik Barmack said: “For more than three decades, this groundbreaking show has been reaching teens with important stories and starting in 2016 our members around the world will be able to enjoy and discover the newest chapter of this great show.”
To provide some continuation, the show will continue to be produced by the Toronto-based Epitome Pictures. ‘Degrassi’ prides itself on its ability to portray realistic situations faced by teenagers, dealing with issues like homophobia, body issues, violence and self-esteem.
TeenNick will be lowering the curtain on the current iteration of ‘Degrassi’ when the finale of the new season airs on July 31st. Over the course of fourteen years and more than 350 episodes, it was originally called ‘Degrassi: The Next Generation’ before shortening its name in 2010.
