Steven Colbert returned to his satirical Colbert Report Monday night and addressed the alleged rumors about "why the machinery of this great nation ground to a halt last week" when he was absent for two days. Finally, he said, "Oh -- one more thing. Evidently, having 11 children makes you tough as nails." It was a reference to Colbert's 91-year-old mother, who reportedly has been ailing, prompting Colbert's absence from the show. On Friday, Colbert sent out an obviously serious message on Twitter thanking fans for their thoughts and prayers.
