Casualty and Game of Thrones actor's ear-biting assailant appeared in court charged with wounding with intent
The man accused of biting off part of the ear of the actor Clive Mantle has appeared in court, BBC News reports. 32 year-old Philip McGilvray, of Arbroath Grove, Hamilton, Scotland, is accused of attacking Mr Mantle on March 24, 2013, at a Travelodge hotel in Newcastle.
The accused man appeared at Newcastle Magistrate’s court, charged with wounding with intent. He was granted conditional bail and will next appear at the court on April 26, 2013. When the incident was originally reported last month, the BBC revealed that the altercation had occurred because of a dispute over noise, according to Mantle’s agent. He understood that Mantle had been pinned to the floor after asking other hotel guests to keep the noise down. The 55 year-old actor had just finished a run in the Ladykillers, at the Theatre Royal. Luckily, doctors at Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary were able to sew the detached part of the ear back on. “He is very shaken and shocked by what has happened, you don't expect this kind of thing to happen in a hotel. The part of the ear that was bitten off was found and sewn back on. Mr Mantle said the police, ambulance and hospital staff were amazing," his spokesperson said at the time.
Clive Mantle played the role of surgeon Mike Barrett in the long running BBC drama Casualty. More recently, he has also played the part of Lord Greatjon Umber in the first season of Game of Thrones.
