The music composer Robert Sherman has died, aged 86. Sherman, along with his brother Richard, penned some of WALT DISNEY Studios' most iconic songs, such as 'I Wanna Be Like You' from The Jungle Book.
In 1967, Robert and Richard Sherman were called in at the eleventh hour to write songs for The Jungle Book, after the majority of Terry Gilkyson's songs were scrapped by the studio. The Sherman brothers were instructed to rewrite something fun and upbeat; a brief that they filled with enduring success. The brothers had previously been employed to work on the 1964 musical Mary Poppins. They took inspiration from English musical hall music, composing tunes such as 'Chim Chim Cher-ee' and 'Supercali-fragilisticexpialidocious.' Despite putting on a united front in interviews, the New York-born Robert and Richard reportedly quarreled frequently and their working relationship was a turbulent one. In 1970, the Sherman brothers composed music for The Aristocats and the following year, for Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
In 1965, The Sherman brothers won two Oscars for their work on Mary Poppins. One for Best Music, Original Songs and the second for Best Music, Substantially Original Score. They would be nominated a further seven times throughout their career but never took home an award after their initial win. Regardless, though, their music has survived the test of time, and the movies to which Robert Sherman contributed are still favorites across the globe.
