Cheerleader Sarah Jones is facing 10 years in prison after she was charged with having sexual relations with a high school student when she was a teacher. The 26-year-old is best known as the captain of the Cincinnati Bengals cheerleading squad and pleaded not guilty to sex abuse charges on Monday (April 2, 2012).
According to Chicago Sun-Times, Jones pleaded not guilty in Kenton Circuit Court to first-degree sexual abuse and unlawful use of electronic means to induce a minor to engage in sexual activities. Each charge carries with it a potential five years in prison. Meanwhile, her mother Cheryl is facing a single charge of tampering with evidence - she is the principle of the Twenhofel Middle School and was placed on paid administrative leave. The relations between the cheerleader and the student are alleged to have taken place between October 1 and December 31, though Jones resigned from the school on November 29. Her attorney Eric Deters said, "The student denies it. The parents of the student are upset that this has gone where it has gone. They don't have anything bad to say about Sarah. Sarah denies it.There's no victim. There's nobody saying 'Hey, this happened",
A pre-trial date has been set for June 11, with the actual trial scheduled for June 27 2012. Jones and her mother are required to wear an electric tag until that time.
