The biggest performers this weekend were box office veterans.
In showbiz, Mondays mean one thing – it’s box office roundup time. Unfortunately for Hollywood, this weekend’s earnings were pretty disappointing. Despite a solid performance by Universal’s Ride Along and Lone Survivor, checking in at $21.2 million and $12.6 million respectively, it was a cold, cold weekend for movie earnings, Variety reports.
In its fifth weekend, Lone Surivor continues to perform.
The sci-fi re-imagining of the classic Mary Shelley character I, Frankenstein, starring Aaron Ekhart, barely delivered the dismal total of $8.3 million in three days – possibly because the title is somewhat misleading and, much like other CGI-fueled fairy tale films (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and Jack the Giant Slayer come to mind) I, Frankenstein actually has very little in common with its source material. So far, the film’s disappointing earnings make it the biggest flop of 2014.

Over at Universal, the weekend brought much better news. While Ride Along dropped 49% from last weekend and Lone Survivor saw a 43% dip in profits, this brings the films’ tallies to $74.5 million and $93.6 million respectively, both sizeable numbers for the typically slow January.
Overall, domestic box office came in at a little over 3% ahead of this time last year, which isn’t necessarily saying much — Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters came in first then, delivering $19 million-plus.
In the Oscar nominees’ corner, American Hustle kept on hustling and broke the $125 million mark this weekend (earning $7.1 million for the weekend alone), while The Wolf of Wall Street added $5 million to the bank. The Leonardo DiCaprio starrer is projected to break the $100 million mark within the coming week.
Jonah Hill in The Wolf of Wall Street - obviously, you should see this film.
