Dark Lord: Teenage Years by Jamie Thomson, and My Big Shouting Day by Rebecca Patterson won the two prizes in the different age groups (ages 7-14 and 6 and under, respectively) for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, reveals the Booktrust. 

In just its fifth year of existence the Roald Dahl Funny Prize for the best and most hilarious English kid's books has become a staple of quality for children's literature. It was set up by the Booktrust, a reading and writing charity with the aim of encouraging everyone to enjoy reading, and the former laureate of Children's Literature Michael Rosen. 

Jamie Thomson's book 'Dark Lord: Teenage Years' sees an Dirk Loyd, the eponymous 'Dark Lord' find himself transformed into a chubby teenager, and trapped on Earth. Rebecca Patterson swapped being a classroom assistant for writing a book based on her own daughter, about a little girl who manages to find something to shout about in all her day's activities. 

About the 'Dark Lord' judge Michael Rosen said: "This is a wonderfully absurd take on beings from another planet or another world and like all books with this theme it makes us think about how odd and crazy we are." Another judge, Lucy Mangan, spoke about My Big Shouting Day, saying: "What can I say? It just made me laugh and laugh... And then it has the lovely ending, when our heroine is exhausted and overcome with remorse but wakes up to a better day tomorrow." May this first five years of celebrating wonderful and witty children's literature (that can also be loved by the adults that make them bed-time stories) be followed by decades.
