The controversial star, who scored a number 6 hit single earlier this year, will appear in court on Thursday.
Rising hip hop star Bobby Shmurda has been arrested at a New York recording studio. The charges have not yet been revealed, but a sealed indictment will be opened in Manhattan Supreme Court tomorrow.
Law enforcement sources told The Daily Beast that the Brooklyn-based musician was placed under arrest at the Quad studios in Manhattan in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Further searches of his property, including his car, his associates and the studio turned up over a dozen firearms, the same sources said. It must be emphasised that these details are as yet officially unconfirmed.
Chad Marshal, another rising rap artist known as Rowdy Rebel and within whom Shmurda has collaborated, was also reportedly arrested at the studio, but details are similarly unconfirmed.
Kati Cornell, the director of public information for NYC’s special narcotics prosecutor, confirmed to that Shmurda was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday, and that a press conference will be held on Thursday afternoon to discuss the case, but declined to give any more details.
Shmurda, real name Ackquille Jean Pollard, aged 20, scored a substantial hit in July this year with his single ‘Hot N***a’ (censored and repackaged as 'Hot Boy' for radio play), the video for which went viral on the back of its ‘Shmoney dance’, topping 7 million views and prompting the likes of Rihanna and Beyonce to copy its steps on their recent tours.
The Miami-born rapper has been the target of a police investigation for some time, and is believed to be linked to a spate of gun and drug-fuelled violence that has impacted New York.
It’s also not the first time that Shmurda has had a run-in with the law. In June this year, he was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon, and later released on a $10,000 bail. He also pleaded not guilty to a marijuana possession charge following a bust in October.
His debut EP, Shmurda She Wrote, was also released back in the summer, and it is believed that the rapper was working on his first full-length album, scheduled for release in 2015 and said to be produced by Jahlil Beats.
