Archie Andrews will be killed off in a dramatic plotline to conclude the 75 year-old series. The red-headed comic book character will feature in his last storyline on Wednesday where he'll be seen taking a bullet for his best friend, Kevin Keller.


The Archie Comics series will give fans a conclusion to remember as Archie dies performing a heroic act by sacrificing his own life for that of the openly gay senator. Keller had been pushing for more gun controls in Riverdale which had attracted attention from those who strongly disagreed with him.

Andrews' death will take place in Life with Archie No. 36, while issue No. 37 will fast forward a year to focus on Riverdale honouring his legacy. The freckle-faced do-gooder first appeared in comics in 1941 and soon began to represent an American wholesomeness that generations cherished.

Other incarnations of Archie will continue to live on in other Archie Comics series, according to the AP, but the news of the character's violent demise has made headlines.

"Not to be too grandiose, but this demise is a fitting and tonally perfect tribute to a character who has always put his friends first," said Chris Cummins, of Den Of Geek. "This is a publicity stunt for sure, but one with heart that will have permanent ramifications."

"The way in which Archie dies is everything that you would expect of Archie," Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater said in a statement. "He dies heroically. He dies selflessly. He dies in the manner that epitomizes not only the best of Riverdale, but the best of all of us. It's what Archie has come to represent over the past almost 75 years."

Goldwater wouldn't reveal the identity of the gunman but discussed why the team had decided to take such a drastic decision. "We wanted to do something that was impactful that would really resonate with the world and bring home just how important Archie is to everyone," he said.

"That's how we came up with the storyline of saving Kevin. He could have saved Betty. He could have saved Veronica. We get that, but metaphorically, by saving Kevin, a new Riverdale is born."

The 36th issue of Life With Archie will be out Wednesday 16th July.
