For the first time, CBS's NCIS beat Fox's American Idol in the ratings among both total viewers and the 18-49 age group Tuesday night. The special Tuesday edition of Idol drew just 10.9 million viewers in the 8:00 p.m. hour, while NCIS produced nearly twice that number -- 20.4 million. At 9:00 p.m. NCIS: Los Angeles handily beat the second hour of Idol, 16 million to 12.1 million for Idol. In the past, when Idol regularly aired on Tuesdays and Wednesdays it handily beat NCIS. At 10:00 p.m., the new CBS show Golden Boy handily beat the competition with 9.3 million viewers. NBC's Smash, in the same hour, crashed with just 2.6 million, the lowest number for the musical drama to date.
