Of course Young isn't the first musician to make a foray into technology. Dr Dre has been very successful with his ‘Beats’ brand. Originally starting as headphones, they brand has gone onto include other audio equipment. 'Beats' have also just launched their own subscription-based online music service known as 'Beats Music' in January, which looks to take on Spotify and Google play music.

So is Neil Young the new Dr Dre? There’s a question we never thought we’d ask. Well, Young’s new toy certainly does look interesting and there’s clearly been a lot of thought put into it (3 years of development). But its going to take a lot more than celebrity endorsements to topple Apple, only time will tell if the ‘Pono player’ really is a revolution in music or just another technology flash in the pan spearheaded by a celebrity.
