This Is Not A Circular
Album Review
Recorded in the Scottish highlands & the product of Barry Christie & Marco Rea, This Is Not A Circular consists of electronic beats, spacious pads & child-like harmonies resulting in a colourful foray into cheerful 60's influenced pop with hints of Brian Wilson & Belle & Sebastian.
Occasionally this debut album throws some interesting moments; the placement of melodic layers often providing ear catching moments & highlight 'Barbara Bach' is a real stunner with trip-hop beats, excellent harmonisation, epic synth work & clever sampling, but all too often the overly happy content proves to be a major headache. Songs such as the nursery themed 'I Can See A Rainbow' & the Scissor Sisters-esque 'String Thing' might just have you reaching for the sick bucket.
Despite a few nice touches, The Rainbow Family's debut album really is just a little too jolly for its own good.
