Turn The Lights Out
Album Review
Chicago's Ponys follow their two critically acclaimed albums on In The Red with their Matador debut, recorded at Electric Studios with John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr, Son Volt, Screaming Trees). A classic twin-guitar rock band, The Ponys sound veers from The Only Ones and The Jesus and Mary Chain to a punkier MC5/ Television mix.
Turn The Lights Out is both denser and noisier than anything they've done to date - there's little subtlety. They're like one of those bands who sound good enough as a support band at a sweaty gig, but who may not quite be headliner material. The interplay between the guitars and the buried vocals sound like a fuzzy 80s rock band, but here they sound like one band for the first time in their career, even while they try out here a piece of Sonic Youth, here some New York Dolls. If you were a J&MC fan, The Ponys are your noughties band - the intense fug of reverb rock is something best experienced loud.
