Maggie Reilly Rowan Album

All anyone should need to know about Maggie Reilly is that she was the voice of Mike Oldfield's Moonlight Shadow and Family Man. If you remember those songs, you already know how gorgeously pure and hypnotic her voice was. Well, it's no different now. Rowan marks a welcome return to the studio, for all of us. Still centred in English and Celtic folk, Rowan is a gentle and rather beautiful disc, gossamer-light in places, and unencumbered by over-production or over-elaboration.

If only Tesco shelves had room for this rather than Katie Melua, the world would be a better place. Reilly has one of those voices, like Susanna Hoffs, whose tone and character would allow her to sing the phone book and make it compelling - on this disc, her material is strong: traditional yet modern. The mere mention of Moonlight Shadow should make you want to seek this album out - Reilly has, if anything, improved with the years.
