Johnny Boy Johnny Boy Album

Johnny Boy are Davo, on guitars, loops and vocals, and Lolly (ditto), and this is their debut album, two years after their debut single You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes And You Get What You Deserve did so well.

Unfortunately, once that opener is dispensed with, the band sound like they're stuck in some 80s pop remainder bin binge - occasionally they hit the heights of, say, St Etienne, but mostly they are somewhere south of Black Grape, with an odd Motown-y, Phil Spector-ish noise thing going on. If this were a single and an album full of b-sides, that may be forgivable, but if that single starts the album at, say 6 out of 10, the rest of the album barely rates a 4. Johnny Boy sound like a couple of people allowed more time that is good for them in a recording studio, playing with every gadget. Some time writing songs may have been a good idea, instead.
