Review of Nineteeneighties Album by Grant Lee Phillips
Grant Lee Phillips
Nineteeneighties
Album Review
Phillips was responsible, in Virginia Creeper, for one of 2005's best albums - a lush, accessible diamond of the songwriting craft. Here, he covers some of his favourite songs from the 1980s, providing a fantastic counterpoint to the idea that the 80s were about cheap disco and Duran Duran.
With songs from Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, The Church, New Order, Joy Division, REM and The Pixies delivered by Phillips' gorgeous hard wood voice over an acoustic instrumentation, the overall effect is one of simply great music simply revealed.
The reinvention of songs like Killing Moon, Boys Don't Cry and So. Central Rain is delicious. Phillips' work with his band Grant Lee Buffalo always showed a debt to this music, but here, unplugged, he reveals his deep affection.
