Album Review

For some people, the Arctic Monkeys are just so passé. They were there before all of us, saw them in a tiny venue, and have moved on. The band they should now embrace, and a good tip for the rest of us, is this Danish band. Like the Shout Out Louds from across the water in Sweden, who made one of 2005's freshest, most accessible new rock albums, this band approach rock with no reverence whatsoever, instead offering up track after track of honest enjoyment. Taking in all points from the Cure to Australian icons the Hoodoo Gurus and (of course) The Strokes, but mostly via some version of Neil Young, the guitar-led songs are excellent, changing pace every time, and mixing in some folk, country, and REM-style edge, but maintaining the energy throughout. On the evidence here, Figurines would be a hoot live.
