Sinéad O'Connor responded to Miley Cyrus' comments in a recent interview by penning an open letter to the 'Wrecking Ball' singer. Cyrus, in an interview with Rolling Stone, stated her recent video for 'Wrecking Ball' was inspired by O'Connor's music video for her 1990 hit single 'Nothing Compares 2 U'.

Cyrus stated her latest video, in which she appears licking a sledge hammer and wearing little, was intended to be "iconic". In the video she stated "It's like the Sinéad O'Connor video [for "Nothing Compares 2 U"], but, like, the most modern version. I wanted it to be tough but really pretty - that's what Sinead did with her hair and everything."

However, Cyrus has failed to understand O'Connor's image decision and the 46-year-old singer commented upon this in her letter. O'Connor stated "The look I chose, I chose on purpose at a time when my record company were encouraging me to do what you have done. I felt I would rather be judged on my talent and not my looks." She previously expressed her disdain in the letter at Cyrus' video, writing "I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way "cool" to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos."

On the issue of Cyrus' recent discovery alteration of image, from her wholesome Hannah Montana look to her latest lack of clothing, O'Connor said "I've been in the business long enough to know that men are making more money than you are from you getting naked." Furthermore she emphasised the danger of this in sending messages to young women,  that Cyrus' actions are not merely on a small scale as "Whether we like it or not, us females in the industry are role models and as such we have to be extremely careful what messages we send to other women."

O'Connor did not appear to be chastising Cyrus, her letter was more an attack on the music industry and its executives. She described the process of executive's "pimping" their young stars, stating Cyrus "ought to be protected as a precious young lady by anyone in your employ and anyone around you, including you." She also wrote "I am happy to hear I am somewhat of a role model for you" and her letter resulted from a sense of "motherliness".

O'Connor implied Cyrus' latest actions resulted from her need to shed her Hannah Montana image, by removing her clothes. She even went so far as to compliment the singer, writing "Your records are good enough for you not to need any shedding of Hannah Montana."

Cyrus responded on her Twitter account to O'Connor's letter.  She included some of Sinead O'connor's latest tweets which refer to an urgent need for psychiatric care. She compared the outspoken singer to Amanda Bynes, who is currently in court ordered therapy.

Cyrus is not only offensive but appears completely unaware of the social stigma attached to mental health issues. Many of those dealing every day with a mental illness find it difficult to discuss such issues. Cyrus is merely reiterating the distain many face when admitting they are unwell. Cyrus is a role model to thousands of young people worldwide, by expressing outdated and poorly informed views she is setting a poor example.
