One person you wouldn’t expect to way in on Miley Cyrus’ recent antics was Sinead O’Connor. But after Miley cited O’Connor as a personal role model and one of the inspirations behind her Wrecking Ball video, the Irish musician decided to seize the opportunity and reach out to the younger singer in an open letter that sounds all but motherly. O’Connor shares some of the lessons she has learned about the music industry over the years and urges Miley to rely on her talent and avoid exploitation.

Is Miley Cyrus selling her sexuality?

“The music business doesn’t give a s**t about you, or any of us,” O’Connor writes in an open letter posted by Entertainment Weekly “They will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think it’s what YOU wanted… None of the men oggling you give a sh– about you either, do not be fooled.”

O'Connor isn't the first person to criticise the pop star.

Hearing that kind of harsh criticism from someone you consider a role model must be tough on the pop-princess-turned-tabloid-feeder, but O’Connor makes sure to soften the blow somewhat, by writing statements like: “…you have enough talent that you don’t need to let the music business make a prostitute of you. You shouldn’t let them make a fool of you either. Don’t think for a moment that any of them give a flying f**k about you. They’re there for the money… we’re there for the music.”

O'Connor urged Miley to not let herself be "prostituted."

The 47-year-old singer also had some words to sling at Ms Cyrus about her new look, reportedly also inspired in part by O’Connor: “The look I chose, I chose on purpose at a time when my record company were encouraging me to do what you have done. I felt I would rather be judged on my talent and not my looks. I am happy that I made that choice, not least because I do not find myself on the proverbial rag heap…”

Earlier today, Miley, seemingly undisturbed, responded to the situation by posting a screencap of a series of disturdbing tweets from a parody account, apparently impersonating O’Connor. Oh, and there was an Amanda Bynes reference thrown in for good measure. Not the most mature of responses, to be sure.
