Miley Cyrus declared on her debutant appearance on Saturday Night Live that twerking is no longer cool and that her childhood character Hannah Montana had been laid to rest, revealing that the former Disney favourite had been "murdered." The headline-grabbing singer steered clear of any real controversy on the night however, with her opening monologue providing the closest thing to controversy on a routine night at the Rockefeller Center.

"Now that white people are doing it, it seems kind of lame," Cyrus said of the backside-gyrating dance she managed to turn into a minor phenomenon at the VMAs. She also went on to mention how the same performance had brought about the collapse of American society, but other than these passing mentions to the VMAs her appearance on the show was void of any other mention to her many gossip-fuelling mishappenings from the past few weeks. That means no mention of her 'Wrecking Ball' video, and therefore no parody of it either (which was something of a disappointment to be honest), no word on her feud with Sinead O'Connor or any discussion on any of the crazy outfits she's been rocking.

The appearance from Miley wasn't toned down to nothing though, as she starred in a parody of her 'We Can't Stop' video, poking fun at the US governmental shutdown in a sketch where she played a slutty Michelle Bachmann. Other Cyrus-starring sketches included her appear as Hilary Clinton in a fly-on-the-wall MTV series and as Scarlet Johansson for a mock audition video for the new 50 Shades of Grey adaptation. She also appeared in two other skits; as a rap-obsessed high school student and as a morose early-morning TV presenter.

Also standing in as the musical guest for the show, Miley performed her two latest singles, dressing much more appropriately for a rendition of 'Wrecking Ball' than she did in the video shoot. She was then accompanied by three acoustic guitarists for a stripped down version of 'We Can't Stop,' wearing a white dress that, needless to say, had see through elements to it. It wouldn't be a Miley show if there wasn't some skin now would there?
