Though Miley was famous as a singer and actress on Disney's Hannah Montana, her recent rebellious transformation and a controversial performance at this year's MTV VMAs has seen the 20 year-old star rise to greater prominence and, some might say, notoriety.

Bangerz sold 270,000 copies in its first week, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan, via Reuters. The album also leads seven new debut records in the top 10 of this week's Billboard 200 chart, including Panic! At The Disco's Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! with 84,000 copies sold and Rapper Pusha T with My Name is My Name.

US-born Miley has enjoyed sizeable sales in the UK too, reaching the top of both the singles and albums charts with Bangerz and single 'Wrecking Ball' which beat rapper Eminem's comeback single 'Berzerk.' Upon her British success, Cyrus said "I truly appreciate the love I'm getting from the UK. Not only is this my second Number 1 single, but even more amazing is my album has also gone in at Number 1. I can't wait to be back in the UK next month," via BBC News.

Though her current popularity is undeniable, Miley has received a backlash from those who deride her new image, her raunchy dancing and her frequent nudity. She recently received an open letter from Irish singer Sinead O'connor who wrote on her website: "I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way 'cool' to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos." O'Connor's concern references Cyrus' 'Wrecking Ball' music video during which she runs her tongue over a hammer in a clip which has been hilariously parodied by Hulk Hogan.

Let's Face It: Miley & 'Bangerz' Are Inescapable.

Fame is not a new phenomenon for Cyrus, whose father is country star Billy Ray Cyrus and whose career began when she was still a child in 2003 and saw her rocketed to worldwide fame when she landed the role of Hannah Montana. Bangerz is her fourth chart-topping album to date and though her critics may not like it, it probably won't be her last.
