Nic Pizzolatto has spilled the beans on the long-awaited upcoming second season of the hit HBO crime drama, True Detective. Matthew Mcconaughey and Woody Harrelson memorably took the lead roles in the electric first season of the show but an entire new cast and location will be introduced for season two.

The True Detective showrunner has previously revealed that the next season would feature "hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system" but in a new interview with public radio program To the Best of Our Knowledge, via MTV, Pizzolatto teased the new episodes a little more.

"Right now, we're working with three leads. It takes place in California - not Los Angeles, but some of the much lesser known venues of California - and we're going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did in season one," he said.

"The characters are all new, but I'm deeply in love with each of them. We've got the entire series broken out with a couple of scripts, and we'll probably start casting in earnest in the coming months," Pizzolatto added.

Los Angeles has been ruled out as the new location for the detective show, leaving plenty of mystery still over where the fresh case will be based. The starkness and dilapidation of Louisiana was prominent in the first season therefore fans are expecting the new set to be just as immersive and relevant to the storyline.

Despite strong earlier rumours, actress Jessica Chastain has pretty much been ruled out of playing one of Pizzolatto's "hard women" roles. An official confirmation could be on the horizon seeing as casting is to start "in earnest within the coming month."
