The 44 year-old actor can currently be seen starring in Dallas Buyers Club, a movie where he plays a drug addict who becomes infected with AIDS and starts up a drug trafficking business. To play the role of Ron Woodruff, McConaughey was asked to drop 135 pounds and photos taken at the time show a much more emaciated form than the wholesome Texan cowboy fans are used to seeing.

Speaking to GQ Magazine, Matthew reflected on his preparation for the role that has recently awarded him the Hollywood Film Awards 'Best Actor' gong with more awards almost guaranteed in the run up to the Oscars. "I was saying to myself, 'Well, it's not like you are in a concentration camp. You're eating, but you're not starving. So eff you, McConaughey.' I got relative," he said.

Although the actor has had his fair share of serious roles, his turn in Magic Mike will always be one of his more memorable characters. Playing a male stripper and strip club manager, Matthew looked as though he was having a whale of time and indeed it appears that the ability to get his kit off without embarrassment wasn't a hard state of mind for him to acquire.

Fans will remember that the Dazed and Confused actor was arrested in 1999 when a neighbour dialled 911 to complain about all the noise coming from McConaughey's Texas home. Police arrived and caught Matthew naked and playing the conga drums loudly. He was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and fined $50 for the noise.

When quizzed by GQ over that same incident, the now father-of-three replied "Of course I still play the congas naked! I just close the windows." Now married to Brazilian model Camila Alves, he admits that though he still has the vitality of his early career as well as the inclination to play drums naked, he has undergone changes that have helped him deal with fame.

"I got much more selfish," he admitted. "When I say I have gotten a lot more selfish, I mean I am less concerned with what people think of me. I'm not worried about how I'm perceived. Selfish has always gotten a bad rap. You should do for you. I wanted new experiences."

He revealed that he decided to "go into the shadows" in the same year as the drums incident, saying "I was enjoying myself. My relationship with acting was fine. But like in any relationship, you need to shake things up. It didn't mean what we'd been doing was less than. I just wanted a charge. Like, 'Let's throw a spark into this.'"

Dallas Buyers Club will be released on the 7th February 2014.
