Matthew McConaughey says he cried three times whilst watching his latest movie Interstellar and also shed a tear while filming the sci-fi epic. The Oscar-winning actor plays a widowed engineer who travels into space to explore a newly discovered wormhole and the 45-year-old admitting that the final product left him in tears.

"I watched it, and I cried three times," McConaughey told People magazine at the New York City premiere Monday.

The actor also admitted that filming several of the scenes left him in tears, too "It throttled me," he said.

Much of Christopher Nolan's story centers on McConaughey's character's relationship with his daughter and trying to create a future for her.

"Even if you don't care that much about the science of it or even the love story between a parent and a child, you just want to go for the wild, epic ride it is," the actor said. However, he did admit to not having to go through the same pain with his own family. (McConaughey has a wife, Camila and is father to Levi, 6, Vida, 4, and Livingston, 22 months).

"There hasn't been a promise or a goodbye like Cooper has to go through with his daughter in this.I'm very fortunate: I get to take my family with me when I go to work, so my goodbyes so far haven't had to be so long."

Interstellar has scored strong reviews from critics and opens in theaters in the U.S. and UK on Friday (November 7, 2014). The movie is expected to pull in over $50 million over the weekend and will battle Disney's latest animated adventure, Big Hero 6, for the box-office top spot.
