Madonna turned into the ultimate diva on Wednesday night (December 19th 2012) when she refused to perform in Chile because some of the concert goers were smoking cigarettes.
The singer was doing a sound check in Santiago wearing a large coat because it was an outdoor arena (where, incidentally, smoking was not prohibited) when she started to rant about the second hand smoke. 'There are people smoking right now. No smoking!' She began. 'If you're going to smoke cigarettes, I'm not doing a show. You don't care about me? I don't care about you. All right? Are we going to play that game?' Despite this less than warm welcome, the Chilean fans carried on enjoying themselves but when they refused to heed the 54-year-old's command, she got even more annoyed. 'I'm not kidding. I can't sing if you smoke. Entiendes?' She said. 'If you love me then don't smoke. No smoking. You're looking right at me and smoking cigarettes, like I'm a stupid f**king idiot.' In spite of the sulking, however, the show went ahead - probably because the fans would be the least angry of people if she cancelled it.
Madonna has been the subject of much controversy in her shows this year. In November, she was accused by religious activists in St Petersburg of disrespecting their religion by promoting homosexuality and trampling on an orthodox cross. She also angered fans at a New Orleans gig by insisting they vote for President Barack Obama in the November elections as well as causing concert goers at a gig in Colorado to walk out after brandishing a fake gun on stage only weeks after the tragic Denver cinema massacre. She may be making her beliefs known, but she's certainly not making any friends in the process.
