A 39 year old Israeli man has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of hacking into the computers of some of music’s biggest artists including Madonna and selling their music online. Madonna's 13th studio album, Rebel Heart, has been plagued by leaks in recent months ahead of its March 10th release date.

A police spokesman confirmed to Reuters that the man had been detained, but declined to name him or his alleged victims, citing a court-issued gag order. However Israeli media have alleged that the man taken into custody was a former contestant on a popular television singing contest in the country.

In December unmixed tracks from Madonna’s upcoming Rebel Heart album found their way online, causing the singer to rush release six tracks on iTunes, months ahead of schedule.

Police in Israel said its cyber unit had carried out an investigation along with the FBI following a complaint from a Madonna representative in Israel. "He is suspected of computer hacking, copyright violation and fraudulent receipt of goods," a police spokesman said.

Speaking to Reuters, private investigator Asher Wizman, said Madonna's team had contacted his company several weeks ago to look into the matter after rumours spread of a possible Israeli connection to the leak.

"Our investigator found her computers, at home and at a studio, were broken into from a computer in Israel," Wizman told Reuters. "We tracked down the computer, and the man behind it. After gathering enough evidence, we turned to the police and he was arrested today.”

Charges are yet to be filed against the man. Madonna’s Rebel Heart album is due out on March 10th.
