Lindsay Lohan has contracted a nasty mosquito-borne illness while relaxing on vacation over the Christmas holidays.

The Mean Girls actress jetted off to the tropical islands of French Polynesia in the South Pacific Ocean earlier this month (Dec14) for weeks of relaxation after her West End stint in stage play Speed-the-Plow finished.

However, Lohan's vacation has taken an unfortunate turn after she contracted chikungunya, a viral disease spread by mosquitoes which leaves sufferers with fever and joint pain and other symptoms such as headaches, nausea and fatigue.

Over the weekend (27-28Dec14), Lohan posted a picture of herself on a jet ski on Instagram.com and wrote, "Before I got chikungunya" and on Sunday (28Dec14) she added, "Being sick is no fun".

She later explained, "In good faith with good people. I refuse to let a virus effect my peaceful vacation. Be safe and happy on the new year all..."
